Graziers’ Investment Company Limited (GIC) was previously known as Australian Wool Services Limited (AWS).

At the Annual General Meeting of shareholders of AWS held on 30 November 2007, shareholders approved a change of the corporation’s name to Graziers’ Investment Company Limited.

AWS was established in 2001 as a successor to the Australian Wool Research and Promotion Organisation (AWRAP), which in turn was the principal member of the International Wool Secretariat (IWS). AWS originally comprised two subsidiaries - The Woolmark Company Pty Ltd and Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI). AWI was subsequently de-merged from AWS in 2002.

The Woolmark Company was sold to AWI in 2007 as approved by the majority of shareholders' votes at a General Meeting held on 28 August 2007. For more details on this sale see the Explanatory Statement (PDF) accompanying the meeting of shareholders approving this sale.

GIC remains responsible for concluding the legacy issues inherited from its predecessors and managing the wind-down of the group.

Unless there is a compelling reason otherwise, once a clean break with the IWS Pension Fund has been achieved, which will not occur until at least 2012, all remaining assets sold, the residual GIC group will be wound up and its surplus assets distributed to shareholders, once all the costs of winding up the company have been paid, including redundancy payments to management and Directors whose resilience, commitment and dedication, has put the company in the strong position it is in today. However, any such decision to wind up the company will be subject to approval by the shareholders at the relevant time.
